The Organization Process:
Four Simple Steps to Success

The most common thing I hear from people when it comes to getting organized is “I don’t know where to start!”  Disorderly closets, overcrowded kitchen cabinets or garages that are bursting at the seams certainly can be intimidating. That’s where I come in. I can help you put things in perspective and tackle those organizing dilemmas one step at a time.

Speaking of steps… Step-by-Step Declutter utilizes a four step organization process.

Step 1: Consult

The organization process begins with an in-home consultation. As you take me through your space we’ll talk about what’s working and what’s not. We’ll set goals for our time together and establish priorities (i.e. where to start).

Resist the urge to tidy up before I arrive; it’s important that I see the space as is in order to make an accurate evaluation.

My Pledge to You

Working with a professional organizer can be a little intimidating. People sometimes feel uncomfortable inviting a stranger into their home to see their messes and sort through their stuff. As a professional organizer, I am not there to judge; I’m there to help. I love helping people get organized and stay organized! You have my pledge that our sessions will be confidential and judgment-free.

Step 2: Organize!

Once we’ve settled on a game plan, we’ll get right to work. We’ll roll up our sleeves and dive right into the business of decluttering, sorting, and organizing. Depending on the size and scope of your project this may take one session, or it may take multiple sessions. As we work we’ll develop systems to help maintain the order we create together. In the end, you’ll have some newly developed organizational skills to go along with your newly organized space.

Step 3: Donate/Recycle

A big part of decluttering is deciding what to do with the items you no longer want or need. Step-by-Step Declutter is happy to remove one carload of unwanted items for donation free of charge. Arrangements can also be made for a charitable pick up for large loads or over-sized items. You’ll receive a donation slip for tax purposes, either in person or by mail. If curbside recycling is not available, I will gladly haul recyclables to the recycling center as well.

Step 4: Follow-up

Within 48 hours of a session you’ll receive a detailed follow up. Depending on your particular project, this may include any or all of the following:
  • a review of the things we accomplished
  • a game plan for future sessions (if applicable)
  • a to-do list of tasks you can work on in between sessions
  • suggestions for organizational products you may find useful

The service doesn’t stop with our final session. With your permission I will continue to follow up with you periodically to check on your progress and find out how your systems are handling the test of time. If things aren’t working as we planned, I’ll gladly make a ‘house call’ free of charge to help you come up with a better solution.

You can find more information on the types of services I provide here.

For a better understanding of my organizing philosophy and the kind of work I do explore the Organization Basics section of the website (see the tab at the top of the page).
