Assessing Your Storage Needs

Most people take a rather haphazard approach to storage. When a need arises, they attempt to meet it, usually with some sort of container or bin. This often leads to an uncoordinated assortment of storage solutions.

A better approach to solving your storage problems is to create a storage plan. The first step in creating a functional storage plan is to assess your storage needs.

Don't Contain It - Eliminate It!

Every good storage plan starts with eliminating the unwanted. Storing stuff you don't need, want, or use is a waste of time, space, energy, and money. In contrast, decluttering before storing decreases the amount of stuff that needs to be stored (thus saving space) and makes it easier to determine what your actual storage needs are.

Assess Your Stuff

Once you've streamlined your stuff, it's time to assess what remains. Ask yourself:
  • What sort of stuff do I need to store?
  • How often will I need to access the items I'm storing?
  • What types of storage would work best for storing these items?

Assess Your Space

Next you'll need to assess your space.
  • What, if any, constraints does the space have with regard to the shape and size of storage containers?
  • What features are inherent to the room, and how can they best be utilized?
  • Is there any built-in storage? If so, what type of storage is it (shelves, cabinets, drawers)?
  • What furniture currently exists in the space? How might it be utilized as storage?
  • Is there a piece of furniture in another room that would better meet my storage needs in this space?

Assess Existing Storage

Chances are you've got some sort of storage on hand. Ask yourself these questions regarding existing storage options:
  • Is this effectively meeting my storage needs?
  • Is it user friendly? Or is it difficult to use?
  • Does it compliment the space or stand out like a sore thumb?
  • Do I like this particular solution?

Consider Function

Function is a key consideration in assessing storage needs. A variety of factors impact the function of a particular storage item, and all of these must be weighed against your needs and preferences. Some things to think about when determining functionality are:
  • Size - Both of the items being stored and the container itself. Overstuffed containers can be frustrating to close, and they don't hold up well over time. On the other hand, an over-sized container that is only partially full is a waste of space.
  • Material - Storage containers come in a variety of materials including plastic, metal, wood, wicker, and canvas, to name a few. The type of container you need will depend, in part, on the type of items being stored. Other important considerations are who will be using the container and how often. Different materials obviously have different characteristics. Do you need a container that is light weight or heavy-duty? One that is flexible or rigid? One that is clear or opaque?
  • Ease of Use - Open containers are easier to access, but they can have a less tidy appearance. Unlike containers with lids, they can't be stacked, and they are often less uniform in shape than their lidded counterparts. Lighter containers are easier to utilize, but they tend to be less durable. Another characteristic that impacts ease of use is mobility. Would you prefer a container with wheels? Or one with handles?

Consider Durability

Durability is an important factor to consider when assessing your storage needs. You obviously want whatever container you invest in to last. To determine the degree of durability needed, consider the following:
  • What will I be storing in this container?
    • Small, light weight items stored on a desktop will obviously require a less durable storage solution than heavy-duty items stored in the garage or attic.
  • Who will be accessing this container most frequently?
    • Different people have different storage needs based on their physical capabilities, and potentially their size. A person with arthritis will need containers that are easy to open. Children need containers that are lightweight and flexible, yet durable. As a relatively short person, I prefer smaller, easier to manage containers to large, over-sized ones.
  • Where will this container be stored?
    • Durability includes weather resistance. Items being stored outside, in a shed, or in other spaces that experience temperature fluctuations (and potentially exposure to moisture) are best stored in hard-sided plastic containers.

Consider Style

Great organization marries form and function. Storage solutions should compliment the space in which they reside by blending in and coordinating with the decor. Visible storage should be attractive storage. With so many storage options on the market (and an internet full of retailers), it's easier than ever to find the perfect container for a specific storage need.
When a storage need arises, it's tempting to run out and grab some plastic bins, but it's not always the best option. With a little thought and planning you can find the perfect solutions for your storage needs - solutions which will last for years and add to the style and function of your space.
