"A Place for Everything, and Everything in its Place"
Let’s look at a
recent room makeover in order to better demonstrate the relevance of the maxim
“a place for everything and everything in its place”.
The target of this project was a teenage boy’s bedroom. As you can see from the before photos it was definitely lacking in order. The one dresser in the room was continually covered in clutter. The spacious closet, however, was underutilized. The large, deep shelves and drawers were mostly empty.
The key to decluttering this space was to assign a place to everything. Fortunately, there was plenty of space available. It was just a matter of deciding what to put where.
Versatile white plastic bins from IKEA were purchased. These particular bins come with lids, but in the case of this room makeover I opted not to use them. Open storage allows this young man to easily see the contents of each bin. In addition, he can take out and put back whatever he needs with minimal effort.
Did you notice all those books lined up along the top of the dresser? The first step in this room makeover was to find them a new home. They fit perfectly in the larger of the white bins placed spine side up so that the titles are visible. The books are still readily available, but they are out of the way. They are stored in a manner that protects them from damage while keeping them tidy.
Additional bins were used to store loose items according to type: Boy Scout paraphernalia in one, electronics in another, and so forth. Everything is easy to see and easy to get to. The once cluttered dresser is now neat and open.
Best of all, this young man has successfully kept his room looking great for more than two months, and I foresee that this will remain the case far into the future now that there is a place for everything and everything is in its place!
Do you have a space that needs decluttering?
Often things are out of place because they have no place.
Assigning a place for everything not only neatens up the space; it makes maintaining the space a piece of cake.
